At the start of the 2024 school year, Miami Dade was the first county to outfit their school buses with camera systems designed to detect and document drivers that illegally pass. This has enabled law enforcement to issue tickets similar to red light cameras to drivers without having to physically be present to witness the violation. So far the numbers are staggering, it’s estimated that 78,000 violations have been issued from Aug-Nov 2024. We’re already seeing signs of mistakes in the review process and that some of these tickets are result of human error. Unfortunately, more counties are planning to have bus camera systems online soon. Hilllsborough County has reportly issued at least 13,000 school bus camera tickets also.

If everyone simply paid their fine, it would cost drivers $15,600,000 and that’s just from Miami during the first 3 months of the school year!
